Partial Reduplication in Adjectives

These Cantonese adjectives are all in the form of ABB. They are irregular and not interchangeable with other reduplicated B units (*紅雪雪 is ungrammatical). Also, you can never say AB by themselves (*紅bok is ungrammatical). I have limited the list to phrases unique to Cantonese and likely do not exist in Mandarin Chinese. 

The following phrases are categorized by the senses. Interestingly, I realized many of them come in opposite pairs:

肥嘟嘟 -fat (ameliorative; cute)

肥tan tan - fat (pejorative; disgusting)

瘦孟孟 － skinny

矮得得 - short (height)

短chit chit - short (length)

• TOUCH (texture, temperature)

濕dat dat - wet

乾爭爭 - dry

軟惗惗 - soft
硬倔倔 - hard

滑潺潺 - slippery

滑luet luet - smooth

鞋烚烚 - rough

凍冰冰 - cold

熱辣辣 - hot

涼浸浸 - cool

暖笠笠 - warm 

• SMELL

香噴噴 (also in Mandarin)- fragrant 

臭崩崩 - stinky

• TASTE

甜耶耶 - sweet

酸未未 - sour

咸dat dat - salty

• HEARING
